On Thursday, Tesla CEO and noted fancy leaper Elon Musk will take the stage to showcase the company's robotaxi plans, a la the "Cybercab." Although the vehicle we see isn't expected to be a fully functional product, investors and Tesla fans are hoping for a working prototype or other signs the company can navigate the technological and regulatory obstacles it will face. You can watch the event on an X livestream at 10PM ET. With the Cybercab, Musk is aiming for a fully autonomous vehicle that runs on a Tesla ridesharing network. Owners will also reportedly be able to make their cars available on the network to run as autonomous cabs, likened to a "combination of Airbnb and Uber."

Tesla is holding another AI Day, and it'll be particularly easy to tune in. The automaker is streaming its 2022 event tonight at 9:15PM Eastern on YouTube (below) as well as its website. Elon Musk has warned the presentation will be "highly technical" and could last six hours, but you may have multiple reasons to watch even if you're not fond of diagrams and in-depth explanations. Notably, Musk said in June that Tesla pushed AI Day to September 30th in hopes of having a functional Optimus humanoid robot. It would just be a prototype, but it would show that the company's vision of an autonomous helper exists beyond pretty 3D renders.

Tesla's Full Self-Driving might still be in beta, but that isn't stopping early adopters from using it for autonomous trips... well, almost. As Teslarati describes, Tesla enthusiast Whole Mars Catalog has posted a video showing their FSD-equipped Model 3 completing a trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles with virtually no interventions. The lone exception was just after crossing into LA, when the driver took the reins to avoid large debris on the road. This appears to be the first known, recorded instance of Full Self-Driving completing this trip without input, Whole Mars Catalog said. It's a notable feat for technology that's still rough around the edges and, despite its name, doesn't let you take your hands off the wheel.

Yesterday, Tesla released two very interesting videos of the latest version of its self-driving technology on the new Autopilot 2.0 hardware. While they are fascinating to watch, they were both sped up. I think it's worth revisiting the test with the video slowed down to real-time in order to really appreciate the level of autonomy Tesla achieved so far. The first thing you will notice with the video below at approximate real-time speed is that the system hesitates on a few occasions. It certainly doesn't look like an experienced comfortable driver, but it does look like a capable licensed driver, which is an accomplishment on its own.
